Abstract:
The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory has successfully collided polarized protons at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=200 GeV in its initial polarized engineering runs in 2002-2004. The goals of the spin physics program in the upcoming running periods are to measure directly and precisely the gluon helicity contribution to the proton's spin, to determine the contribution of the light quark and anti-quark helicities, and to provide insight into the transversity structure function. I will give a short introduction to the so-called proton spin puzzle, present initial results from RHIC, and discuss prospects for future measurements.
