Abstract:

Our understanding of very high-energy astrophysics has undergone profound change in the last decade. Discoveries by ground-based telescopes operating over a wide range of energies from 1011 eV to 1020 eV have produced many more questions than answers. For example, we do not understand the origin of particles above 1020 eV, nor do we understand the mechanisms that power the sources of TeV gamma rays. This talk will survey the astrophysics of the extreme Universe, as revealed by observations made with gamma rays, cosmic rays, and neutrinos. Special emphasis will be placed on results from, and future prospects for, gamma-ray telescopes operating in the TeV energy range.
