Michael Shaw, who graduated with a B.S. in Physics in 1983, will discuss experiences in his 20-plus years in the Laser Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Michael joined the Computations Division at LLNL supporting the Atomic Vapor Laser Isotope Program AVLIS after receiving this undergraduate degree. He obtained his Ph.D. in Applied Science from Davis in 1993 while he was a full-time lab employee. For 18 of his 21 years at Livermore, Dr. Shaw has worked on one of several large laser projects. His talk will reflect on his roles with the Laser Program, with a focus on his current position within the National Ignition Facility NIF.

Dr. Shaw will also discuss the work environment at Livermore, trying to give a flavor of what life is like at a national laboratory. He will use his experiences to give students an idea of the wide cross section of projects at the lab, and offer his advice on the skills and talents that lead to a successful and fulfilling career at LLNL.
