Abstract:
Cosmological simulations reveal the cosmic web structure of the universe, where moderately overdense filaments connect collapsed regions such as groups and clusters of galaxies. These filaments, named "Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium", or "WHIM", account for a large amount of the so-called "missing baryons" and produce detectable signals in UV and X-ray bands. I will discuss detailed imaging and spectroscopy studies of this WHIM gas. I will also talk about our recent progress in studying the local (z ~ 0) hot gas and determining whether it's part of the WHIM in our Local Group or hot interstellar medium.
