Abstract:

Ultrafast (sub-ns to ns) magnetization switching sets the attainable data rate in magnetic information storage. We have developed a materials-based approach to increase the switching speed in ferromagnetic thin films and devices. Dopants exist which can either speed or slow realignment, raise or lower the rotational speed, and in patterned arrays, shape the reversal mode. To understand microscopic mechanisms in the contributed properties, element-specific magnetization and magnetization dynamics are studied through x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and our recently-developed time-resolved extension (tr-XMCD) of the technique with 100 ps resolution. A technical goal of the research is to enable data rates of 2 GHz and above in spin electronic devices.
