Extra Dimensions -Einstein's
4th Dimension and Beyond
Time/Location: 8:30pm 194 Chemistry
Time is Einstein's fourth dimension, and his special theory of relativity joins space and time.
Come and hear about theories of additional extra dimensions on very small spatial scales,
and how experiments may soon be able to test for their existence.

Einstein's Double Life: Light and the Photon
Time/Location: 8:00pm 194 Chemistry
In this lecture, I will discuss one of Einstein's greatest discoveries, that light behaves as though
it had a double life, sometimes acting like a wave, and sometimes like a particle. Some
current uses of the particle side of light's character will also be considered, including
measurements permitting the holographic imaging of atoms.

Transformational events in science often are preceded by periods of great puzzlement. The
inexplicable dark side of our Universe likely represents such an opportunity. In recent years
it has become apparent that our Universe is dominated by unseen forms of dark matter and
dark energy not described by today's physics. Through its gravity, this dark matter and dark
energy control the dynamical evolution and the fate of the Universe. I would like to share
with you some images of dark matter and the excitement of our exploration of the dark side.

It is seldom the case that one can anticipate where great breakthroughs in science will occur, and even
harder to anticipate where these breakthroughs will find applications to benefit mankind. How, then
are such breakthroughs made, and how must science be supported in order to provide the greatest
benefit to mankind. The speaker will discuss these challenges in light of some well recognized
advances, and suggest both personal and national strategies to best push forward the frontiers
of knowledge while also helping to meet many of the challenges facing mankind.
