International Applicants

The graduate program has vigorous research areas in Condensed Matter, Cosmology/Astrophysics, Computational, High Energy and Nuclear Physics.

The GRE General Test and the GRE Physics Subject Test are required for full consideration. If English is not your native language, or you have not studied for at least one year at a university or college where English is the only language of instruction, you must also include your TOEFL exam scores. Our program prefers to admit international students who have already obtained the M.S. degree.

If you are unable to pay the U.S. $90 application fee, your application will not be reviewed for admission. There are no waivers of this fee.
For this reason, the department has established a pre-application procedure for international applicants to determine if they are eligible for consideration. This saves the applicant the time of having to assemble the required applications materials and the cost of submitting the application.

For the pre-application process, please provide the following information in PLAIN ASCII TEXT (NO ENCODED MATERIALS) to grad-info@physics.ucdavis.edu:

  1. The specific reason you are interested in UC Davis. Please specify which UC Davis physics research projects you are interested in along with your qualifications to work with them.
  2. Your GRE (Individual test, NOT TOTAL SCORE) scores. Example: Quantitative 780/90%, Physics subject 750/50%, Analytical 760/75% If you do not have scores yet, please wait until your GRE scores are ready and then contact us at that time. Do not send estimated scores.
  3. Your numerical grades and class rank, any awards or honors received, and any publications during your undergraduate education (not during secondary or non-university employment).
  4. Your TOEFL scores. UC Davis requires a minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL paper-based test, 213 on the computer-based test and 68 on the internet-based test.  Again, please wait until your TOEFL scores have arrived before contacting us.
  5. Your undergraduate institution and any graduate institutions attended, as well as the field of study. We only accept international students from the very top universities in each country, whose undergraduate training is equal to that of a top American university.
  6. Please provide your name and contact information.

For additional admissions information please contact the Graduate Program Coordinator at grad-info@physics.ucdavis.edu.
