Discussion/Labs

There are 11 different DL sections.  Each DL meeting lasts two hours–twenty minutes.  Each DL section meets two times a week.  The DL sections meet in room 166 Roessler

Learning resources

While there is no assigned textbook, there are a number of different learning resources:

Course Notes: A set of course notes is available from the Bookstore.

Web page (my.ucdavis.edu): The Physics 7B web page has copies of some course materials. Updates and announcements will be posted there. If you do not yet have a campus computer account, get one in the next couple of days.

Quizzes:  There will be eight quizzes given in lecture, each 15 to 20 minutes long.  You must take each quiz during your officially registered lecture time otherwise you will receive a -1 score (if you take a quiz in both lectures then neither one will be counted).  If you have a conflict, then e-mail the lecturer and explain why you need to take the quiz at the other lecture.  There will be no make-up quizzes but we will drop the lowest quiz.  Quizzes are closed-book and closed-notes.  Calculators are allowed for the quizzes and often necessary; make sure you have one and bring it to lecture.

Final Exam:  The final exam will be given from 10:30 am-12:30 pm on Monday March 19.  You must take the final exam at this assigned time and day.  If you cannot take the final at this time, do not take Physics 7B this session.  The only exception is if taking the final at this time conflicts with observance of your religious practice.  (Students often have several finals on the same day as the scheduled Physics 7B final.  This is never an excuse for changing the final time.)

Quiz and Final Grading:  The quiz questions will be graded by assigning a letter code that characterizes your response. These letter codes will be translated into a letter grade using the standard 4.5 point scale (middle “C” = 2.0, middle “B” = 3.0, etc.) A description of the meaning of the letter codes will be distributed when the quizzes are returned.  If, after carefully comparing what you actually wrote on your quiz question and the description of the letter codes, you believe the wrong letter code was assigned, you may request a reconsideration of the letter assigned to a particular response. To do this, download the regrade form from the web, fill it in and turn it in to the lecturer with your quiz at the lecture following the return of the quizzes.

Course expectations and grades:  The responsibility for learning is yours.  If you participate fully in lecture and DL and complete the assigned work, you should do well.

Your course grade in Physics 7B is made up of three components.  The first of these is your Exam Grade, which is determined by your performance on the quizzes and on the final exam.  The second reflects your participation in and preparation for DL and the third component reflects your participation in lecture.

Your Quiz Grade is the average of the seven highest individual quiz grades.  Your Exam grade is then the higher of either of two weighting schemes, whichever is to your advantage:

(a) 50% Quiz grade + 50% Final exam     (b) 20% Quiz Grade + 80% Final exam

Discussion/laboratory Grading:  The DL is central to the course. If you fail DL, you will fail Physics 7B. Your DL Instructor will determine your DL grade based on your preparation (consistency in completing the out-of-class assignments) and participation in the DL. How this grade is determined will be discussed further by your TA. DL grades are:

HP            High pass--increases your exam grade by 0.250 points (on the 4.5 scale). However, a high pass will not raise an "A" to an "A+."

P            Pass--does not change your exam grade.

LP            Low pass--decreases your exam grade by 0.250 points.

U            Unsatisfactory--decreases your exam grade by 1.000 points (i.e., a whole letter grade: "B-" to "C-", or "B" to "C", etc.).

F            Fail the course.

Attendance in DL is mandatory. With two unexcused DL absences, your highest DL grade is a low pass. With three unexcused DL absences, your highest DL grade is unsatisfactory. Four or more unexcused DL absences is totally unacceptable, and you will fail Physics 7B.  Low passes will also be given for chronic tardiness, leaving early, lack of active participation, incomplete homework, and behavior that contributes negatively to the productive functioning of the small groups.

Lecture Grading (extra credit):You should have already purchased a “personal response system” infrared device (you need to get batteries for this device) that you will use to answer questions posed by the lecturer in class.  Your answers will be graded as follows: correct = 0.12, incorrect = 0.06, no answer=0.  Your average score on these questions will be added directly to your final grade in the class (i.e. Class score = Exam Score + DL Score + Lecture Grade).

Academic dishonesty:  Cheating will not be tolerated.  Suspected cheating of any form is always immediately reported to Student Judicial Affairs for appropriate action. We appreciate any suggestions you may have to help us reduce the temptations and opportunities of academic dishonesty.

Course Materials Fee:  Students in Physics 7B are required to pay a course materials fee to cover the cost of materials they are given in the DL portion of the course.  A fee waiver is available for Pell Grant students and others who cannot pay.  Please obtain a fee waiver form from Georgie Tolle in the Physics Department office and complete it before January 22, 2007.
